I think I’m going to post old cartoon theme songs every morning until Christmas to remind myself how weird things have always been. This was during the period where everyone was into surf culture, pizza delivery, and interest in anime/martial arts. Pretty much it was all about taking things kids liked and putting them together!
Samurai + Pizza + Cats = Samurai Pizza Cats
[Ninja + Pizza + Turtles] * Mutation = Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Cars + Robots + Aliens = Transformers (luckily they were established before pizza and surfing trended)
Ninjas + Home Alone + [(Surfing + Pizza)/3] = 3 Ninjas
Surfing + Ninjas + Video Games + Rob Schneider and Lesley Nielsen = Surf Ninjas (which I freaking love!)
Add in Tone Loc (that dude with the deep voice) and you have yourself everything for kids in the 90s.

How dare you lump transformers in with those...those...unrealistic things!

All I’m saying is that GI Joe figured out merchandise is more lucrative than cartoons. Transformers figured out having great merchandise first is enough to sell any cartoon. Then everyone got into the “make the toys THEN attach a 23 minute cartoon-ad to the toys and toss in 7 minutes of commercials to sell more toys.” The 90s was nothing but commercials which is why everyone said TV was bad for kids. I also think it’s why Millenials lash out against being marketed to, we were taken advantage of and exploited for all of our childhoods by marketing.

I used to love this show. It came on back-to-back with the mid-90s Mega Man cartoon when I was a kid.

On the downside, I weep when I see what passes for saturday morning cartoons these days. Damned Millennials...
